inspired by my recent longing for Quilmes, i started thinking about the different beers consumed in the many countries visited in the past two years.
i’ll start with South America because it will always be close to my heart. there’s Argentine Quilmes, the ever-present beer we drank on a regular basis during the 5-month stay in Buenos Aires. a little too much Quilmes, as a matter of fact. then there’s the occasional local beers, like Peru’s Arequipena (although i never visited Peru), Austral in Patagonia (awesome trip to Bariloche), Schnieder Negra back in Buenos, and a few local brews like Iguana. Brazil honored us with Brahma and Santa Cerva in chopps, but more often than not we just had Skol.
then there’s China, with San Miguel Dark in Hong Kong, and otherwise being total tourists and drinking Asahi, Sapporo, and Tsingtao. basically same beers we could easily find in New York.
Europe came with the usual suspects, but i was happy to try some French brews while in Paris and Avignon, of which i recall Kronenbourg 1664 and Fischer (i love the cap on Fischer).
back home in New York, i mostly tried interesting-sounding beers at local pubs, mostly ales, and i would love to go back and make a list at some point. i do remember drinking Allagash White and Bluepoint at The Smith, and Ukrainian Czech beers at the beer garden in Astoria on 24th Avenue. speaking of Astoria, a wonderful Greek neighborhood i miss dearly, of course i tried Mythos and Marathon at the many Greek taverns visited, but most often at Uncle George’s.
that is all. pretty good for a girl, eh? :>
